Marcus sat beside the bed, holding Isabella's hand as he struggled not to doze off. He was failing when she moved her fingers and jolted him awake. She was smiling.

"How long have you been awake?" he asked.

"A few minutes. Long enough to see your head bobbing." She looked around the room. "Sam? Philippe?"

"Both safe."

"How long have I been out?"

"Almost twenty-four hours. The first few were touch and go. The bullet nicked your aorta, and you nearly bled out before you started healing."

"Mostly dead." She smiled.

"Yes, mostly dead."

"I guess we got lucky."

The image of the professor sinking into the sewer water crossed his mind. "Not lucky enough."

"I know." She changed the subject. "What now?"

"I think we are safe. We wait until you are well enough to travel, and then we meet Naaman."

"Where?"

"Frankfurt."

"Why Frankfurt?"

"Because it's close to Nuremberg, and that's the last place we know the spear was."

"Makes sense." She glanced around the room. "Anything to eat around here?"

They stayed one more night and watched a snowstorm bury the city. Isabella was up and walking around by the time dinner was ready, and close to normal by morning. They were all sipping coffee when Philippe came into the living area.

"We need to get going," he said. "I have secured a charter plane, but if we do not leave soon, the airports will be closed."

Nodding, they gathered their things. Thirty minutes later, they were moving down the deserted streets toward a small municipal airport. Within the hour, they were climbing up through the drifting snowfall, carrying with them the disappointment of their failure.
